What is a Cookie?
A cookie is a message given to a web browser by a web server. The browser stores the message in a text file called “cookie.txt”. The message is then sent back to the server each time the browser requests a page from the server. The main purpose of cookies is to identify users and possibly prepare customized web pages for them. When you enter a website using cookies, you may be asked to fill out a form providing such information as your name and interests. This information is packaged into a cookie and sent to your web browser, which stores it for later use. The next time you go to the same website, your browser will send the cookie to the web server. The server can use this information to present you with custom web pages. So, for example, instead of seeing just a generic welcome page you might see a welcome page with your name on it.
For our site, the cookie downloaded is for gathering general site navigation information: that is, how many times a computer visits our site, what pages, what pages are visited more frequently, etc. The cookie does not store sensitive information, as you do not give it any other information. This form of information collection, or “hit-counting” is widely accepted as common and fair practice. We use this information, including what browser you use, what pages you visit, what site may have referred you, and more to improve any and all aspects of the site.
The name cookie derives from UNIX objects called magic cookies. These are tokens that are attached to a user or program and change depending on the areas entered by the user orprogram. Cookies are either called “session” or “persistent” cookies depending on the time spent on your computer. “Session” cookies are considered short-term, and delete themselves when you close your browser. “Persistent” cookies remain on the user’s PC, even after the browser is closed. The cookie on our site is a persistent cookie, in order to eliminate counting page hits from the same person repeatedly. The site that we use and the author of the cookie is Statcounter This is the only cookie on our site.
